Pullin Piano Studio

OMTA State Achievement Auditions

Pullin Piano Studio

Congratulations to the 18 students of the Studio who succeeded beyond my wildest dreams at OMTA State!  Held on May 19 and 20 at the University of Oklahoma's Catlet Music Center, my students were part of over 2,100 students from across the state of Oklahoma to participate in this two day event.  Friday's storms did hinder some of the out-of-town students' travel arrangements; several  of the rooms' schedules ended up topsy turvy, but all played in the end.  I worked all day Friday in the Awards Room; it was truly fun to see all the students coming through receiving ribbons, medals, trophies, and/or plaques.  I really enjoyed handing out some of those awards to my own students.

*The James M. Breckenridge Repertoire Award

The James M. Breckenridge Repertoire Award is presented to students for the adjudicated performance of a memorized piece from each of the four stylistic eras:  Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Impressionistic/Contemporary.  This takes a minimum of four years and may take up to eight years to complete.  Students may play the pieces in any order and need not be in consecutive years.  Students must perform at State for the first three years and the District Achievement Score from the fourth year must be a rating of I- or higher.  Students must play at State the fourth year (receiving a I or I+) after which they pick up their award.  This year the Studio has five students who qualified for the Breckenridge.  Congratulations to all of you!

**The Clarence Burg Senior Award

Named in honor of the musician/teacher/performer most responsible for getting OMTA off the ground as well as serving as its first president, the Clarence Burg Award is presented to those students who went to State their freshman, sophomore, junior and senior years.  They must score a I-, I or I+ at State each year to qualify for this senior award.  Just staying with piano lessons through high school is hard enough; a student has to keep his/her skills highly polished.  This year I'm pleased to announce that the Clarence Burg Award goes to senior:
