Teaching Philosophy
Mrs. Pullin believes that music is an expression of the human soul. We can be happy, sad, mad, joyful, playful, angry, or many variations of these emotions. Music is a way we, as human beings, express those feelings whether we play the piano or another instrument, sing, or listen to music. Mrs. P. enjoys teaching students music through the medium of the piano. While learning about the piano, her students also learn about history, life, working with other people AND working alone. Learning how to play the piano is difficult. By conquering the week's problems, students will learn how to cope better with future life problems.
Mrs. Pullin believes that all children are capable of learning piano no matter where they are in life. This includes special needs students be they diagnosed with learning disabilities or were born with physical disabilities. They have the same desire to express themselves through music; just not the same physical ability. Mrs. P. does not expect her students to become the next J.S. Bach; she does expect them to learn, work and progress to the best of their capabilities.
The following poem puts into words far better than she can why Mrs. Pullin loves to teach.
Why Teach Music
Not because we expect you to major in music
Not because we expect you to play or sing all your life
Not so you can relax
Not so you can have fun
But so you will be human
So you will be sensitive
So you will recognize beauty
So you will be closer to an infinite beyond this world
So you will have something to cling to
So you will have more love, more compassion,
more gentleness, more good --
in short, more life!
Not because we expect you to play or sing all your life
Not so you can relax
Not so you can have fun
But so you will be human
So you will be sensitive
So you will recognize beauty
So you will be closer to an infinite beyond this world
So you will have something to cling to
So you will have more love, more compassion,
more gentleness, more good --
in short, more life!
