OMTA Achievement Auditions
District and State Achievement Auditions
The Oklahoma Music Teachers Association [OMTA] District Achievement Audition allows students in school grades K-12 (3-12 for the Merit Division) to perform in a non-competitive setting in order to recognize and encourage individual achievement without comparison or contrast with other students of similar age and/or length of study. Students receive critiques. Students receiving a I+, I or I- rating (I+ or I for the Merit Division) have the option of performing again at the State Achievement Auditions. The Moore/Norman OMTA District Achievement Audition is usually scheduled in March (depends on OU's scheduling); OMTA State is usually the third weekend in May (again at OU).
OMTA Performance Categories:
1. Solo Division
a. One memorized solo for a rating
b. Students receiving I+, I, or I- are eligible to enter the State Achievement Audition performing the same solo
2. Merit Division
a. Two memorized solos of equal difficulty
b. Solo listed first on the Entry Form will be performed at the District Audition.
c. Students receiving I+ or I at the District Audition will perform the second solo on the entry form at the State Audition.
d. A Merit entrant receiving I- at the District Audition must play the same solo at the State Audition.
e. Repertoire may not be changed between District and State Auditions.
OMTA Theory Tests
Just as grammar skills are necessary for one's command of communication (language), theory skills are necessary for one's command of performance skills at the keyboard.
Theory Tests Levels:
1. The teacher will determine the test level for each student.
Level 1 will be only for those students in school grades 1st through 3rd unless it is the student's first year of study. (A kindergarten student who has prepared for, and can read the Level 1 theory test is allowed to take Level 1.)
Level 2 will be limited to those students in 2nd through 6th grades unless it is the student's first year of study.
2. Theory test levels may be changed up to one week after the entry deadline.
3. Students who score 75 or above will advance to the next level the following year. Students who score below 75 may repeat the same level, may drop to the next lower test level, or advance to the next level.
OMTA Achievement Awards
1. The Clarence Burg Award is presented to seniors who have performed at the State Achievement Audition while in grades 9-12 with a rating no lower than I-.
2. The James M. Breckenridge Repertoire Award is presented to students for the performance of a piece from each of the four stylistic eras: Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Impressionistic or Contemporary. Pieces may be played in any order and need not be in consecutive years. State Achievement Audition critique sheets from the first three years and the District Achievement critique sheet from the fourth year must show a rating of I- or higher.
3. The Auda Marie Thomas Award of Excellence is presented to high school students who are actively involved in the District and State Achievement Auditions. Teachers may nominate one student within their studio who has participated in both District and State Achievement Auditions in the current year and who exemplifies outstanding excellence in their work within their studio.
4. The Claudia Busse Theory Award is presented to each graduating senior who has taken the theory test beginning with level 8-9 and advancing each year to the next level for 4 consecutive years. Three test grades must have a score of 80% or higher; one test grade must be 75% or higher with the average score of all 4 tests being 80% or higher.
5. The OMTA Theory Award is presented to each graduating senior who has taken the theory test for five consecutive years beginning at the minimum of Level 4 and advancing a level each year. This award is for outstanding progress in theory and the minimum grade each year must be 90%.
