2019-2020 Mystery Composer Group Assignments
This year's Mystery Composer is.....
Dmitri Kabalevsky
Dmitri Kabalevsky (1904-1987), a composer of the Russian Keyboard/Contemporary period of music, is this year's Mystery Composer (M.C.) The February Group Lessons were devoted to the life and music of Kabalevsky. Each student received a packet with a brief history of Kabalevsky, a written assignment and a listening assignment. Students received a thumb drive containing 31 tracks in order to complete their listening assignment. If you have trouble accessing with the thumb drive, please contact me as soon as possible.
Assignments are due at your private lesson the week of February 17th. However, assignments turned in early will be very cheerfully accepted. Assignments are included in your student's packet as well as listed below by Group.

Elementary Groups
- Student and parent should read the biography included in the packet.
- Complete the Kabalevsky Puzzler paying close attention to the directions. (Yellow sheet.)
- Complete the Listening Assignment found on a second yellow sheet. There are FIVE assignments.
- All assignments are due at the private lesson the week of February 17th.
Middle School Group
(all assignments are found on the yellow sheet of paper in your packet.)

- Write a two paragraph essay on Dmitri Kabalevsky. Include his date of birth and death; his education, and the titles/opus numbers of two collections of piano works for young people.
- Please type all answers. (You may send your essays to me at pullinpiano@me.com)
II. Listening Assignment: (listen to the play list on the flash drive included in your packet in order to answer the below questions.)
- Listen to tracks 1 - 7. Discuss whether or not each composition demonstrates one or more of the compositional tech piques described in your packet.
- Describe the similarities and differences between tracks #8 and #20. These are both preludes; use tempos, the keys the pieces are in and the compositional techniques used to help you with your description.
- Listen to tracks 22 - 31. Had you heard any of these prior to Group Lesson? Do you hear any of the compositional techniques we discussed in Group or that are listed in your packet?
- Have you been assigned your M.C. piece yet? If so, list the title and opus number. Is it included on the flash drive? Describe the key, mood and compositional techniques used by Kabalevsky.

High School Group

- Discuss his views own the piano music available at that time to use in teaching children and the impact of those views on his own compositions for piano.
- Discuss the effect of what living through WWI, the Russian Revolution, and WWII might have had on his life. [Look up the dates of the conflicts listed above then compare them, with the dates of milestones in his life.]
